Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?

Not at all! Of course it's great if you want to come with a friend, but you are absolutely welcome to register without a partner. We change partners regularly during class. Our experience is that you learn better and faster this way... and you get to meet new people, too. :-)

I've never danced before ...

No problem, in our Casino Einsteiger courses we start with the basics of walking - we are pretty sure you have done this before! From there, we move on to body movement, what to listen for in the music, how to lead and follow, and gradually build on from there

Which role should I dance?

In social dancing the dance role, leader or follower, is central. We believe that there is no reason to enforce the traditional understanding of roles, that men always lead and women always follow. On the contrary, we believe that learning both roles can be very beneficial to your development as a dancer. Until you feel ready for the other role, just dance in the one you feel more comfortable in.

What language are the courses taught in?

Classes are taught in either English or German, depending on the instructor. However, there will be at least two trainers in the class, usually several more, and we will always be able to cover both languages. If words fail, we will resort to body language. :-)

What should I wear to class?

Dance shoes:

We know there are very good dance shoes available, but they are not really required. Timba comes from the streets - if you have ever been to Cuba, you will know the condition of those streets

Clothing:

We recommend clothing that does not restrict the movement of your legs and arms.

Gym or training clothes are absolutely fine, but remember that polyester fabrics will smell over time, and there is not really much you can do to get rid of the smell. This is not a problem if you are in a gym, but your dance partner may not be happy.

We don't recommend tank tops/sleeveless T-shirts for men in partner work classes.

Bring a spare change of clothes so you can change your shirt between classes

Hygiene and Comfort:

Deodorant is a must! Yes, humans are known to sweat when they exercise, and so will you. Not everyone has the opportunity to take a shower between work and class, so make sure your dance partner is comfortable by using a deodorant.

We recommend bringing a towel for leaders and a fan for followers. At a certain level, this will become part of your dance routine.

Jewellery:

We strongly recommend that you remove or cover any jewellery that could injure you or your partner:

Hair:

If you have long hair, please do your dance partner a favour and tie it back. Otherwise it will be in your partner's face every time you turn around.

Water:

You are moving, you are sweating - your body needs water to function. If your mouth gets dry, it will smell and make your partner be uncomfortable - drink, drink, drink - water !
