Club History
The Beginnings of Salsativity
The roots of Salsativity go back to 2008, when three salsa enthusiasts - Eva Garcia, Johannes Maurer and Georg Glas - came together to form an association with the goal of strengthening, connecting and revitalizing the local salsa community in Graz. Their initiative was a great success, but after two years, other commitments made it increasingly difficult to devote the necessary time and energy to running the club. Finally they decided to close this chapter with a big farewell party on December 31st, 2010.
Change and New Inspiration
In the following years the salsa scene in Graz changed a lot. While new venues were opened, more venues disappeared (iKU, Kottolinsky, Café Opern Pavillon, Café - Bar - M1). Most of the original founders of Salsativity became less active in the scene, but the passion remained. Georg, in particular, continued to travel from event to event, exploring the Afro-Cuban roots of music and dance. Wanting to share this enthusiasm, he invited others to join, and gradually more and more people became involved. Soon the Salsativity community was present at festivals in Poland (Deakocan Dance Festival), Serbia (Havana en Belgrado, Cubanero), Montenegro, Croatia, Germany, Hungary (Arrebatate, Szombathely), Slovenia (Manana Ljubljana, Cubana Ljubljana, Maribor) and of course in Vienna (¡Menéate!) and Graz.
The Rebirth of Salsativity
In 2018, Salsativity was reborn as a SPORTUNION club, with a new team and a mission to revive the Cuban dance scene in Graz and inspire more people with the joy of Cuban music and dance.
